ENGLEWOOD, N.J. (AP) — Investigators say a fire that destroyed a 150-year-old church in New Jersey is not considered suspicious.
But the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
The fire broke out around 7 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Englewood, with flames bursting through the roof. The church pastor says the blaze appears to have started on a balcony inside the building.
No one was in the church at the time and no one was injured.
The pastor says several area churches and synagogues have offered to host the church’s Easter service.
The church’s website says it was established in 1860 and it is believed to be the first Presbyterian church in Bergen County. The current building was built in 1870 and has been enlarged over the years.
