The Bowdoin College men’s tennis team dominated on their was to a 7-2 victory over the No. 2 team in Division III on Sunday, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
The Polar Bears remained perfect at 4-0 this season and are ranked 11th in the latest Division III national poll. CMS, the defending national champions, fell to 12-2.
Bowdoin overwhelmed CMS in doubles to take a commanding 3-0 advantage early. Kyle Wolfe and Jerry Jiang captured an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles before Chase Savage/Gill Roddy (8-4) and Luke Trinka/Luke Tercek (8-6) closed out the session with wins.
Wolfe (6-3, 6-2). Gil Roddy (6-2, 6-3) and Grant Urken (6-4, 6-4) clinched the win with singles victories, and Tercek rounded out the day with a hard-fought 7-6, 4-6, 10-2 win in his No. 1 match.
Bowdoin won five of six singles matches to collect a 7-2 win over Skidmore on Thursday evening.
The Polar Bears picked up their third win of the season, and Skidmore, ranked 24th nationally, fell to 5-2.
Bowdoin held a 2-1 lead following doubles play as Trinka/ Tercek won a 8-4 decision at No. 1 and Wolfe/Jiang took an 8-5 win at No. 2.
The Polar Bears took command in singles play, getting wins from Urken (6-0, 6-2) at No. 6 and Jiang (6-3, 6-2) at No. 4 to put Bowdoin on the verge of victory. Roddy clinched the win for Bowdoin at No. 5, taking his match, 6-4, 6-1.
Bowdoin will take on Chapman today at 2 p.m.
Men’s Lacrosse
The Polar Bears posted a dominant second half to capture its third consecutive win in a 15-10 contest over Hamilton on Saturday in Davenport, Florida.
Bowdoin improved to 3-1 (2-1 NESCAC), while the Continentals fell to 3-2 (1-2 NESCAC).
The two teams traded goals to open the second half, with Hamilton holding a 7-4 lead. The Polar Bears then took control with an eight-goal run to open up an insurmountable five-goal, fourth-quarter lead.
Faceoff specialist Sam Carlin sparked the run with multiple wins on the dot to go along with a goal. Brett Kujala was the difference maker offensively, scoring a career-high six goals. Daniel Buckmand added three goals and three assists for Bowdoin.
Parker Sessions, Andrew Cowan, and Ryan Kenney stood tall on defense, holding Hamilton to just three goals in the second half.
Baseball
Behind an offensive breakout, Bowdoin extended its season opneing winning streak to five with a 9-3 victory over Lawrence University in Auburndale, Florida on Sunday.
The Polar Bears moved to 5- 0, while Lawrence dropped to 1-6.
Lawrence started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, when Dan Rothbauer grounded in a run.
Bowdoin responded quickly in the second inning, scoring five runs to take the lead. Sawyer Billings, Cody Todesco and Sean Mullaney all tagged RBI singles that made the score 3-0. Peter Cimini wrapped a double to left field that drove in a pair runs before the inning ended.
Chad Martin drove in Bowdoin’s sixth run in the top of the fourth, followed by an RBI single from Brandon Lopez. Cimin added a sacrifice fly in the eighth and Evan Dumont- LaPointe tallied a double down the left field line in the ninth to round out the scoring. The Polar Bears out-hit the Vikings, 13-8.
Richard Arms earned the win on the mound with five complete innings for Bowdoin. He allowed three hits and one run while striking out four and walking a pair.
Softball
Bowdoin jumped out to an early lead and held off Salve Regina, 7-1 before coming from behind to defeat Benedictine, 7- 6 on Sunday. The back-to-back victories moved the Polar Bears to 5-3, while Salve Regina now sits at 1-2 and Benedictine dropped to 4-2.
Julia Geaumont gave Bowdoin a 2-0 lead in the top of the first against Salve Regina, hitting a based-loaded sacrifice fly to drive in the two runs. Samantha Valdivia drove in a run in the following inning off a single to center, with Claire McCarthy crossing the plate on a passed ball.
Caroline Rice tagged a one-out double to right field that drove in two runs midway through the third inning. Jordan Gowdy drove in the Polar Bears’ final run with a sac fly.
In the firth inning, Salve Regina spoiled the shutout with its first run of the game. Geamount went seven innings in the circle for Bowdoin, allowing six hits with no walks and tossing four strikeouts.
Benedictine pushed five runs across the plate in the second inning of game two. Katie Snyder got the Eagles on the board with a two-run double. She eventually scored on an RBI single by Breanna Sobotka and Shannon Fritsche drove in another run, moving the lead to 4-0.
Trailing by five runs, the Polar Bears put together a six-run second inning. Rice started the rally with a lead-off homer to center field. Gowdy drove in a second run and a Katie Gately walk cut the Eagles lead to two. With the score at 5-3, Geaumont hit an RBI single to right, and Rice quickly followed with a two-run double to give Bowdoin a 6-5 lead. Gowdy added one more run in the bottom of the third, and Benedictine added one more run in the fourth, but came up just short.
Emily Griffin pitched all seven innings for the Polar Bears, allowing just one earned run. She tossed eight strikeouts and four walks.
Bowdoin dropped a pair of low-scoring Friday games.
The Polar Bears fell 3-1 to TCNJ (7-5) and 4-3 to Becker College (3-7).
Jess Santelli accounted for all three runs scored by the Lions in game one. With two runners on base, Santelli tripled to clear the bases and put TCNJ up 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Santelli singled to center and drove in her third run of the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Geaumont spoiled the Lions’ shutout bid with an RBI single to right that drove in Jordan Gowdy.
Emily Griffin put in six innings of work for the Polar Bears, earning seven strikeouts while allowing no walks.
Against Becker, Bowdoin got on the board early, going up 1-0 in the first off an RBI double from Griffin.
Becker responded quickly with a three-run second to take the lead. The Hawks crossed home on a pair of wild pitches as well as an RBI single off the bat of Jennifer Boxell.
Ashley Ciepiela scored the eventual game-winner on a passed ball in the fourth.
The Polar Bears cut into Becker’s lead with a two-run fifth. McCarthy tagged a triple to right field that allowed Valdivia to score, and Katie Kaufman doubled to center, driving in McCarthy.
Samantha Roy went 3.1 innings in the circle and allowed one hit with three strikeouts. Geaumont came in to complete the game and tallied a strikeout with four hits allowed.
