ORLANDO, Fla. — Jason Day turned his fortunes quickly with a birdie and a clutch par save from the bunker on the final two holes to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Sunday.
Day closed with a 2-under 70 for a one-shot victory over Kevin Chappell, who looked as if he would finally win in his 150th career start.
Day was one shot behind and facing two of the toughest holes at Bay Hill. He hit his tee shot on the par-3 17th to 12 feet and made it for birdie, and then got up-and-down from just under 100 feet away in a bunker to win by one shot.
Chappell shot 69.
LPGA: Sei Young Kim matched Annika Sorenstam’s LPGA Tour scoring record of 27 under, closing with a 10-under 62 at Desert Ridge for a five-stroke win in the JTBC Founders Cup.
Sorenstam set the mark in 2001 at nearby Moon Valley, shooting a record 59 in the second round. Kim also matched the tournament record of 62 set Thursday by Mi Hyang Lee.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Woody Austin holed out for eagle from a greenside bunker on the par-5 15th and held on to win the Tucson Conquistadores Classic for his first Champions title.
The 52-year-old Austin bogeyed the par-4 final hole after driving left into the water and ended up beating Jim Carter by a stroke on Omni Tucson National’s Catalina Course.
Making his 28th start of the 50-and-over tour, Austin finished with a 7-under 65 for a 16-under 200 total.
EUROPEAN TOUR: India’s SSP Chawrasia pulled off a two-shot win over defending champion Anirban Lahiri and Korea’s Jeunghun Wang with a birdie on the final hole at the Hero Indian Open in New Delhi, India.
