In regard to the “No emergency around dumping caucus system” editorial in Sunday’s Maine Telegram, I say there is an emergency. We need to get back to a primary system and that will take time to coordinate and put together the process – so it needs to start now.
Maine doesn’t need to draw any candidates to campaign here – and they won’t flock here, anyway. We get our information about the candidates from many mediums. Our rural territories make it difficult for many to attend a caucus. We already have primaries for other elected officials; why not just incorporate presidential into these?
We can stay with partisan primaries and still hold them at the same time: Simply hand a ballot to a citizen according to whichever party he or she has registered in. Seems simple enough to me, and much easier on the voters of Maine.
As municipal caucus chair for my town at the last county presidential caucus, I saw so many elderly people standing in line outside in the weather and then trying to maneuver themselves through the crowd that my heart ached for them.
And the voters from my town came to our caucus room, only to find out they could not vote there, so left to vote, not having any desire to become involved in a town political committee!
Republican, Democrat and independent legislators – let’s go back to a primary system and do away with a caucus system please!
