An unresponsive man at a Metro bus stop in Westbrook was revived Thursday after police administered Narcan, according to a news release from the Westbrook Police Department.

Officers responded to the bus stop at the corner of Mechanic and Main streets after receiving a report of a man who was unresponsive. The man, 37, was suffering from an apparent opioid overdose.

Officers administered Narcan, an antidote for suspected opiate overdoses, to the victim and monitored his condition until emergency personnel took over treatment and took him to a hospital, where his condition stabilized.

The incident was the first time Westbrook police administered Narcan in the field since they were trained in its use in February. Equipping officers with Narcan was part of the city’s Community Approach to Stopping Heroin initiative launched in December 2015. A change in Maine law allows police officers to carry and administer Narcan to people suspected of overdosing on opiates.
