Spring is right around the corner, and for avid runners it’s a perfect time to get back outside. On Saturday, March 19, the Children’s Dyslexia Center presents the first-ever Cabin Fever 15K Dash for Dyslexia, a road race to benefit the center.
While there are many local 5K and 10K races, the 15K middle distance is hard to find. Open to only 500 runners, the race follows a challenging course, perfect for a Boston Marathon training run. The course begins and ends at Freeport Middle School.
Timing for the race will be handled by Run In A Race LLC, owned by Brian Berkemeyer of Freeport. Major sponsors are People’s United Bank and the Portland Kiwanis Club. Other sponsors include Oakhurst Dairy, Neuromuscular Rehabilitation, and the Law Offices of Joe Bornstein.
The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Portland is one of more than 50 centers in the Northeast. Established in 2001, the Portland center is a free-standing, locally administered program governed by a volunteer Board of Governors.
The center offers tutoring services free of charge to participants, using the evidence-based Orton-Gillingham method. In addition, the center offers a professional development program, also free of charge, which results in certification at the teacher level through the Children’s Dylexia Centers, Inc.
The center is partially funded by the Scottish Rite Masons, as well as private donations, grants and fundraising events. To register for the race, visit www.runinarace.com.
