An expanded search for David Breunig, 21, of Westbrook, continued Monday, three days after he was reported missing Friday in Orono.
The Maine Warden Service and forest rangers from the Maine Forest Service are now part of the search, which authorities said now includes about 60 people.
According to the Orono Police Department, Breunig was last seen at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, leaving a gathering of friends at a residence on Crosby Street. Since that time, the search has focused around the neighborhood and the nearby Penobscot River.
Breunig is a junior at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. He graduated from Westbrook High School in 2013.
Suzanne Joyce, a Westbrook School Committee member and friend of the Breunig family, said Monday from Orono that she is “hoping and praying for some miracle.”
Joyce’s son, Collin, is close friends with both Breunig and his younger brother, Derek, 19. Both Collin Joyce and Derek Breunig also attend Maine Maritime Academy and graduated from Westbrook High School.
Joyce said she traveled to Orono Saturday after hearing the news, and has been knocking on doors as part of the search. She said the search had intensified Monday, with multiple K-9 units and search planes in the area.
“They are incredible teams working hard,” she said of the search party.
She said a vigil is being planned at Maine Maritime Academy for Monday night.
Breunig is described as 6 foot 4 inches, weighing roughly 225 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, dark blue jeans, and brown Timberland boots.
Authorities are asking that any information on Breunig be directed to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office at 667-7575. This story will be updated.
