Oscars at Smitty’s
All Smitty’s Cinemas across Maine and New Hampshire, including the one in the Windham Mall, will be showing the 2016 Academy Awards for free on Sunday, Feb. 28.
During this community event the theater will also be collecting gently used suits and dresses for local teens who without this help may not attend their prom this year.
No donation is necessary to gain entrance to the event, but all donations are greatly appreciated. Our Red Carpet begins at 7 p.m. and the Awards begin at 8:30 p.m.

Winterfest 2016
Windham celebrates Winterfest 2016 on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Outdoor activities at Lippman Park throughout the day and indoor activities at Windham Veterans Center include a crock-pot cook-off and winter crafts and games until 5 p.m. Entertainment includes Winter Beach Party with Flamin’Raymond and Sizzlin’ Susan, Los’ Lawnchairos at the Windham Veterans Center from 3-5 p.m. and a performance by Molly Calden; enjoy DJ Dennis Healey from 3-7 p.m. Parking is limited at Lippman Park. Essentials Pantry
St. Ann’s Essentials Pantry is open this Saturday, Feb. 27, from 8:30-9:30 a.m. for residents who may be in need of “essentials,” like cleaning products, personal hygiene items, paper products and more. There is no charge.
Sons of the American Revolution meet
The Southern Maine Chapter Maine SAR will meet on Tuesday, March 1, at the Baxter Memorial Library in Gorham. Gather at 9:15 a.m. for coffee, followed by the 9:30 a.m. meeting, which lasts about two hours. Bring along a chart showing your line of ancestors going back to the Revolution War and receive some pointers on turning it into a completed application for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution. Cancer support group
The Windham Cancer Support Group will meet on Monday, Feb. 29, at 6:30 p.m. at the Windham Public Library. If you are touched by cancer in any way, you are urged to attend this group to discuss concerns or just listen. Meetings are confidential and informal.
Legion meeting
American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 2, at the Windham Veterans Center, North Windham. A 5 p.m. social and dinner will be followed at 6 p.m. by a business meeting including nomination of Post officers for 2016-17.
Senior trips
Deadline is Friday, March 4, if you would like to attend a Luck of the Irish Luncheon at Gorham Community Center on Tuesday, March 15. Celebrate Irish America Heritage month with a traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner with all the fixin’s, and listen to Irish songs and stories by Lynn Cullen. You will leave Windham at 11 a.m. and return about 2:30 p.m. Fee is $26. Call 892-1905 to reserve.
On Saturday, March 12, a trip is planned to the Saco River Winter Market including a lunch stop at Sea Salt Lobster Restaurant and a visit to Christmas Tree Shop. Departure time is 10:30 a.m., and return about 3-4 p.m. Transportation fee is $7 and deadline to sign up is March 9. Call 892-1905 to make reservation. Democratic caucus
On Sunday, March 6, Windham Democratic Town Committee will hold its Biennial Caucus at 2 p.m. in the Windham High School closed cafeteria (doors open at 1 p.m.) The caucus will elect State Democratic Convention delegates and alternates, county committee representative and alternates, and take nominations for the town of Windham’s election clerks. On Wednesday, March 9, Veterans Service Officer Matt Haley will be available at the Windham Veterans Center from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. At his February meeting, 18 veterans were assisted. Community theater
Beginning on Friday, March 4, Windham Center Stage Theater will present “Honk, Jr.” at Windham Town Hall. Pickleball tourney

Scrapbooking Day
Project Graduation 2016 is holding a Scrapbooking Day on Saturday, March 19, from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. at the Parish Hall of North Windham Union Church. Corned beef dinner
On Friday, March 18, a traditional St. Patrick’s Day corned beef and cabbage dinner will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Windham Veterans Center. This is the sixth year the American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 has sponsored this good old-fashioned New England boiled dinner with all the fixings. Tickets available at the door for $8 each.
Maine wildfire
On Saturday, March 19, Windham Historical Society presents Lovell storyteller and oral historian Jo Radner who will discuss, “Burnt into Memory: Stories of the Brownfield Fire,” a book based on her interviews of those affected by this tragedy. In October 1947, after a season of drought, wildfires burned throughout Maine. The town of Brownfield was especially hard hit, as 80 percent of the town was destroyed. The event will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the public meeting room at the library. The public is welcome. A $5 donation to the Historical Society is suggested. Refreshments will be available.
