GORHAM — Former Massabesic standout and University of Southern Maine freshman Mike Risti has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie Wrestler of the Week.
Twice named the Pilgrim Wrestling League Rookie of the Week, it is the first time Risti has earned weekly accolades from the New England Wrestling Association.
Risti wrestled his way to an undefeated weekend with a 3-0 performance individually, helping Southern Maine post a 2-1 record in dual meets at the Trinity College (Conn.) Quad Meet.
Wrestling at 285, Risti opened the day with a win by fall over Western New England senior Oumar Keita, putting Keita to the mat in 2:58.
In his final match of the day, Risti helped seal the Huskies’ 23-18 win over Trinity. With USM holding a slim 20-18 lead over Trinity and the match in the balance, Risti battled his way to a 9-3 decision over Bantam sophomore Lucian Cascino, earning the final three points of the contest.
Risti is 22-6 overall. Since moving up a weight class from 197 to 285, Risti has surged and has posted a 13-2 record. He is 11-3 in dual meets and 11-3 in tournaments/ invitationals, and has six wins by fall.
Southern Maine returns to action Saturday at the Johnson and Wales Tri- Match.
