CUMBERLAND — The Town Council on Monday unanimously approved an agreement to share Falmouth’s code enforcement officer for three months.

With Bill Longley on medical leave, the town appointed Falmouth Code Enforcement Officer Justin Brown to serve as Cumberland’s deputy codes officer, effective Feb. 10.

“The town of Falmouth has graciously offered to assist us for a period of time,” Assistant Town Manager Chris Bolduc told the council.

Although Longley’s medical issues have restricted his performance, he is assisting from home by phone and computer, Bolduc said earlier Monday. Fire Chief Dan Small is also helping with inspections.

If Cumberland requires Brown’s services longer than three months, the agreement will be amended, Bolduc said.

Brown will “provide assistance as deemed necessary and there will not be a charge for his services unless he cannot absorb the work within regular working hours,” Falmouth Town Manager Nathan Poore said in an email Tuesday. “If the demand for services creates overtime, the town would charge Cumberland.”

In other business, the council unanimously appointed members of the Central Fire Station Building Committee: Bert Kendall, George Small, Harland Storey, Brian Cashin, Jim Orser, Linda Fulda, Dave Sway, and John Hankinson.

The council voted last month to form the committee, which will explore expansion of the nearly 50-year-old station.

The town more than two decades ago bought a house next to the fire station. It has been using it for sleeping quarters for emergency personnel, Cumberland Town Manager Bill Shane said last month, adding that any expansion is expected to occur in that direction.

The committee will send the council a comprehensive report and recommendation by Nov. 28. A design could be completed early next year, with the project going out to bid later in 2017 and completed in 2018.

The council also swore in three new police officers: Ben Burnes, Matthew Merriman, and Scott Hendee.
