“With the popularity of comedy soaring, we are very pleased to be able to bring some winter entertainment to the Wells community,” said Geoff Payson, a comedian, actor, radio personality and founder of Craft Comedy. “This event would be great for anyone who wants to get a good laugh – people shouldn’t be afraid of being the target of a joke, because we always have a lot of fun.”
Payson, who met Tony V. at a comedy performance in Boston, has been in the business for 31 years. He says he has worked a stage with a variety of now-famous comedians such as Louis C.K. and Joe Rogan, but really enjoys the comedy of Tony V.
“I invited Tony to perform at our comedy show because he really is a great comedian,” Payson said.
Tony V., who was named the “Funniest Person in Massachusetts” by Showtime, brings a mix of streetwise humor and a feel for the human condition to his act. He followed TV performances on HBO, A&E, Comedy Central and MTV with highly-acclaimed appearances on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and more.
Tony V. began his career during the standup comedy boom of the 1980s, when he decided to perform a comedic act at a local venue to fill in for a no-show.
“My career just sort of took off at that point,” he said. “I never thought it would turn into a career, but it’s been a strange and wonderful ride.”
His act will focus on relationship humor, centered around the theme of love and the pressures and allocations that come with it.
“My act is typically 70 percent prepared and 30 percent improvisation,” he said. “It all depends on the crowd, and we’re hoping for a big audience this coming weekend.!”
The performance will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday (doors open at 7 p.m.) at the Wells Activity Center on Sanford Road (Route 109). Tickets are $15 in advance through brownpapertickets.com and $20 at the door. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Craft Comedy is also planning a Wells Summer Comedy Series, a nonprofit collaboration with the Town of Wells that will bring professional comedians to the Wells Harbor Community Park Gazebo on Wednesday nights in July and August.
