With construction to start this month, Midcoast Federal Credit Union plans to open its Freeport branch, which will include its administrative offices, by midsummer, the president and chief executive officer of the company said last week.

Joe Gervais announced late last summer that the company planned to move its operational and administrative staff from Bath to 186 Lower Main St., a large building near Chilton’s Furniture that has remained empty since it was built by Chilton’s founder Bill Martens in 2006.

Midcoast Federal Credit Union also has branch offices in Brunswick, Bath, Edgecomb and Thomaston.

Gervais said that Benchmark Construction of Westbrook, which constructed the building, is the contractor. Bennett Engineering of Freeport is installing the mechanical systems, he said.

“We’ll start construction in February,” Gervais said. “We’ll put in a single-lane drive-through and an ATM in front. As for the inside of the building, it needs significant alteration for our purposes. We are in the design process.”

Gervais said he expects 13 employees to staff the operational sector on the second floor, and five employees serving the public on the first floor. The property has 35 parking spaces.

The company looks forward to doing business in Freeport, Gervais said.

“The town has been great to work with thus far and we really anticipate working with the community,” he said.

Stephanie Petkers, executive director of the Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce, said the welcome mat is out.

“It is wonderful to see a company with such enthusiasm for our community to make the decision to move their headquarters here,” Petkers said. “We are anxious to welcome them and wish them the best.”
