PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns’ season has been swirling rapidly down the drain for weeks and Jeff Hornacek must have known his days as coach were numbered.

The Suns finally fired him after the team ran its road losing streak to 14 games with a loss Sunday night at Dallas.

The team issued a brief news release Monday morning announcing Hornacek’s dismissal after 2½ seasons on the job. There is to be no further comment from the team until General Manager Ryan McDonough talks to reporters at the Tuesday morning shootaround in advance of the game against Toronto.

Because the Suns fired Hornacek’s top two assistants – Jerry Sichting and Mike Longabardi – a month ago, there are only three assistants remaining on the Phoenix payroll.

Assistant coaches Corey Gaines, Earl Watson and Nate Bjorkgren were interviewed for the interim job Monday, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the plans had not been announced.

The Suns said an interim coach would be in place by Tuesday.

The team has lost 10 of 11 games and 19 of its last 21.
