WOOLWICH — Roger L. Gotlibson, 79, of Woolwich, died suddenly on Jan. 23, 2016, at Maine Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born on Nov. 13, 1936, in Colfax, Wisconsin.

He was a member of the Coastal Carvers and Harpswell Carvers, as well as a past member of the Maine Woodcarvers Association. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the American Legion.

Roger enjoyed his animals, especially his beloved mini horse, Dodger. Spending time outdoors was his passion; he loved canoeing, fishing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. He loved to be at his camp and loved woodcarving. He was a tinker of all trades. But most of all, Roger loved being with his family and spending time with friends.

He joined the U.S. Navy in 1955 and after several tours retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1974. Roger then went on to build a successful upholstery business for 27 years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Avil and Gladys (Sundem) Gotlibson.

Roger is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan May (Fontaine); his daughter Coreen Stanton of Bath and her partner Richard Berberich; his son David and his wife Melissa of Phippsburg; grandchildren Jessica and her husband Nathan McIntire, Zachary and his partner Briana Lavallee, Jamie and her husband Brian Bennett, Erica and her fiance Kyle Stoddard; as well as two great-grandsons, Jacob and Miller, and a great-granddaughter, Katelyn Mae.

A celebration of life will follow at a later date.
