Westbrook welcomed a trio of other teams on Saturday morning, Jan. 23 – Noble, Portland and Windham – and earned Ws against all three.

“Three wins today (gives) us some positive momentum going into these couple weeks of the season before regionals,” said Westbrook coach John Nicholas.

“The kids are responding really well,” said Nicholas of the Blazes’ trajectory this season. “Overall, the team is really gelling together.”

“We’re starting to fill all the weight classes,” Nicholas said, “which is making a big difference in these dual meets. We’re not giving up the forfeits like we were earlier in the season.”

“We’re still jockeying for position on a couple guys, as far as the tournaments, the postseason goes – we haven’t made our final decisions yet. These next couple weeks are going to tell us a lot. See where our competition’s at.”

Nicholas applauded some of his athletes – Brandon Lajoie, for instance, who “picked up his 100th win at the Cony Duals about midway through the season.”

“Kyle Hanson is actually approaching 100,” Nicholas said. “He’ll be around 94 after today.”

Note that not every wrestler has four years in which to reach 100 wins. In Hanson’s case, “he didn’t wrestle much varsity his freshman year, so most of those are in three years, which is even more impressive.”

Westbrook hosted Biddeford and Deering for their Senior night on Thursday the 28th. The Blazes have seven seniors: Featherson, Hanson, Jaques, Kennie, David Kimmell, Lajoie and LePage.

“We’re going to be sad to see them go,” said Nicholas of the group. “They’ve been a big part of the program since middle school, a lot of them.”
