Meetings

The Planning Board has scheduled a public hearing for Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 6 p.m., at the Town Hall, on proposed land-use ordinance changes. A meeting will follow the hearing. The ordinance proposal is available at the town office.

The Durham Board of Selectmen will meet Tuesday, Feb. 9, and Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 6:30 p.m., at the Town Hall.

Paint party

PTA fundraiser

Local artist Julie Waterman of Spirited Paints will guide participants in a ladies-night-out paint party, Friday, Jan. 29, starting at 6 p.m., at the Durham AMVETS Hall, 1049 Royalsborough Road. All supplies will be provided. The PTA-sponsored event will benefit the Durham Community School enrichment programs, such as visiting authors, field work, Camp Ketcha, third-grade mandalas, and more.

Dance to benefit

Durham AMVETS

The country-rock band 95 North will play at a dance to benefit the Durham AMVETS, on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 8 p.m.-midnight, at the post, 1049 Royalsborough Road. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Durham Get & Go. Ticket buyers must be at least 21 years old.

Proceeds from the dance will help with the rebuilding of the building after the pipes broke. For more information, call 576-0193 or 353-9400.

Community Lunch

Community Lunch at the First Congregational Church of Durham, 773 Royalsborough Road, will be served Tuesday, Feb. 2. Doors open at 11:30 and the meal is served at noon. The menu includes baked lasagna, green salad, rolls and homemade desserts.

For those interested, the book club will meet over dessert to discuss the current selection, “The Kitchen House,” by Kathleen Grissom.

The suggested donation for lunch is $2-$4, and all proceeds fund future lunches. The general schedule is the first and third Tuesday of the month. The next lunch is Feb. 16. The church, located at the intersection of routes 9 and 136, is handicapped accessible.

Applicants sought for

Durham scholarship

The Durham Scholarship Committee will award one $1,000 scholarship this year. Scholarship applications and qualifications are available at the Durham Town Office or online at www.durhamme.com and must be completed and returned to the Town Office no later than March 11, at 4:30 p.m. The scholarship will be paid directly to the recipient after the successful completion of the first semester (minimum 2.5 GPA). The recipient, who must live in Durham, is limited to one scholarship award. The recipient must have applied and/or been accepted as an incoming freshman in an accredited academic, vocational, professional or technical school, college or university and must attend classes full time.

Applications will be reviewed and finalists chosen by the Durham Scholarship Committee. The scholarship award will be presented at the Durham town meeting on Saturday, April 2. All scholarship applicants will be notified by mail of the committee’s decision by mail prior to April 2.

Nomination papers

for six open seats

Durham’s annual town meeting is Saturday, April 2, and municipal elections are Friday, April 1. Nomination papers are now available at the Town Office to fill the following seats: Two, three-year terms for the Board of Selectmen; three, three-year terms for the Budget Committee; and one, three-year term on the Regional School Unit 5 board.

Any resident of Durham can visit the Town Office to collect the form to gather at least 25 and no more than 100 Durham residents’ signatures to be placed on official ballot. Nomination papers need to be completed and filed with the Town Office on or before Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 4:30 p.m.

Absentee ballots will be available Tuesday, March 1. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is Monday, March 28.

Snowmobile club

Weekly cribbage

The Durham Eureka Community Center, corner of Route 9 and Route 136, hosts cribbage every Tuesday from 9 a.m.-noon.

Rent Eureka Center

The Durham Eureka Community Center is available for rent. The maximum amount of people the hall holds for an event is 50. Contact Nancy Decker at 751-1323 or the Town Office at 353-2561.

Food pantry

The Lisbon Area Christian Outreach (LACO) food pantry, which serves the towns of Durham, Bowdoin, and Lisbon Falls, is open Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m.-noon and Saturday from 8-10 a.m. The LACO Food Pantry is located at the Marion T. Morse School on School Street, Lisbon Falls. The parking lot is behind the Lisbon United Methodist Church, off Berry Avenue. There is also a free clothing bank.
