Bean supper

On Friday, Jan. 22, the American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 will hold a public baked bean supper from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Windham Veterans Center. Tickets are $8 for adults, age 12 an under, free. Tickets at the door.

Chili/Chowder Cook Off

The Lake Region Knights of Columbus will hold a Chili/Chowder Cook Off Competition on Saturday, Jan. 23, from 5-6 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 919 Roosevelt Trail (Route 302) Windham. Get a chance to sample food from as many as 10 competitors and then you are the judge of the winner. Included with the chili and chowder is cornbread, biscuits, coffee/tea/punch and homemade dessert buffet. The price is $7 per person and tickets are available at the door.

Speakout

Bill Diamond will host Speakout on Windham’s local Channel 7 on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. The topic will be the new prison proposal in South Windham. There is more to it than expected. Discuss rumors of expanded facilities. Guests include Rep. Mark Bryant and Rep. Patrick Corey. You are welcome to call in with your questions during the show at 892-0546. You are also welcome to come to the Windham Town Office, Council Chambers, and be part of the audience.

Cancer support group meets

The Windham Cancer Support Group will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, Jan. 25, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Windham Public Library. These meetings are informal and confidential. If you feel you’d like to speak with someone other than your caregivers about what you are feeling going through cancer, come to the meeting. All members “been there.” There is also a Facebook page for WCSG.

Book group meeting

On Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 6:15 p.m., the Windham Public Library holds a discussion series on “Defining wilderness, defining Maine” which is offered in partnership with the Maine State Library. The selection for this month is “Campfires Rekindled” by George Kephart. The last two meetings were cancelled due to weather, so there will also be a brief discussion of “The Wilderness from Chamberlain Farm” by Dean Bennett and “Fly Rod Crosby: The Woman who Marketed Maine” by A. Movie time for adults

Love to watch films? Bring your own snacks and join us at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, in the library meeting room for a movie. This month we’ll be watching “Fried Green Tomatoes” with Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, Kathy Bates, and Jessica Tandy (1990, PG-13, 130 minutes). This movie group is aimed at an adult audience, but all ages are welcome to attend. Please call Sally at the library for more details: 892-1908.

SAR meeting

The Southern Maine Chapter of the Maine SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) will be meeting Saturday, Jan. 23, at 9:30 a.m. in the Baxter Memorial Library in Gorham, located at 71 South Main St. Let us help you trace your roots to your Patriot of the Revolution for separation from Britain, and you can help us locate your Patriot’s final resting place. Stop by the Ocean Garden Restaurant earlier for breakfast if you want; some of the group will be there.

Commemorative pavers

One hundred granite pavers are being made available by the Windham Veterans Association to be installed in the Memorial Garden on Memorial Day 2016. Each paver will have up to three lines of a veteran’s information with a cost of $50 per paver. Over 80 pavers have been sold during the last month. Don’t wait too long. Shaker Village program

Many have visited the nearby Shaker Community, and enjoyed the beautiful buildings, museum and sampled offerings from the shops. On Saturday, Jan. 23, at 9 a.m., former Museum Director Lenny Brooks will provide a look at this unique community in a program titled “In Time and Eternity: The Shakers 1870-1920.” The public program will be held in the meeting room at Windham Public Library. All are welcome. Suggested donation to Windham Historical Society is $5 per person. Refreshments will be available.

Help for veterans

Veterans Service Officer, Matt Haley will be available at the Windham Veterans Center on Wednesday, Jan. 27, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Starting in February, Haley will hold office hours on the second Wednesday only of the month with extended hours from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. He can be reached at his office near the Portland Airport, 151 Jetport Blvd., Room 138W or call 822-2391 or email www.Portland.MaineBVS@maine.gov.
