A Bates College student who was found unresponsive in his campus dorm room on Sunday morning died after being transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston.

Authorities said he was suffering from an unknown medical condition.

James Jhun, a Bates senior, was unresponsive when he was first found, and college officials had no information on the cause of his death, said Bates College spokesman Kent Fischer.

“This is a terrible loss for his family and the entire Bates community, and we are working hard to provide support to his family and friends at this difficult time. We are profoundly sad and share the tremendous grief of his family,” Fisher said.

Jhun, who was a dual citizen of the United States and South Korea, was due to graduate from Bates in May with an undergraduate degree in environmental health studies and a minor in music, according to his resume posted on LinkedIn.

Jhun’s hometown was Lincoln, Massachusetts, and he graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in the class of 2012, according to his Facebook profile.

Jhun was on the Bates College dean’s list for his academic performance last semester and listed his grade point average on his resume as 3.47 for his college career so far.

In addition to those academic accolades, Jhun was bilingual in English and Korean and completed an environmental health and safety internship last summer with the government of the South Korean city of Busan, his resume states.

Jhun was also the founder and president of the Bates Buddies Club, a child literacy program run by Bates students for Lewiston elementary school students. He was a member of the Manic Optimists, a Bates all-male a cappella group, and played trumpet in the Bates College jazz band, according to his resume.
