Renovations to the basketball court at Frasier Field in Westbrook were given final approval by the City Council Monday – more than $57,000 in upgrades that will honor Treyjon Arsenault, a Westbrook teenager who was killed last year.

The work on the court will be done by Maine Track & Tennis of Gray, which will update the court for the first time since it was built in the 1970s. According to the City Council memo, the project includes enlarging the smaller, half court to full size and resurfacing both courts.

The project is funded by $30,000 from the Cornelia Warren Community Foundation, $22,000 from the city’s capital improvement project fund, and a $5,000 donation made by Arsenault’s friend, Derek Breunig, who organized a GoFundMe campaign shortly after Arsenault’s death.

Arsenault, a 2014 graduate of Westbrook High School, was shot and killed in May 2015 in downtown Portland. He was a multi-sport athlete at Westbrook, and frequented the Frasier Field court, even after graduating.

City officials said they are working with the Cornelia Warren group to develop “a comprehensive plan for repairs, renovations and upgrades” for the entire Frasier complex, which also features a softball field and the public pool.

“The outdoor basketball courts get extensive use during the spring, summer and fall and were a favorite of Trey’s,” the memo states. The court was also the site of a large impromptu vigil the day of his death.

In July, Breunig presented a check for $5,000 to the city. In just a few weeks following Arsenault’s death, Breunig’s crowdfunding campaign had raised more than $10,000. The remaining funds were given to Arsenault’s family to help offset funeral costs.

The spray-painted message “RIP Trey” is still on the basketball court at Frasier Field, in honor of Treyjon Arsenault, who was killed last year. On Monday, Westbrook approved $57,000 in renovations to the aging court.
