Programs at the library
Camden Public Library will offer the following programs this week at 55 Main St.:
A “Slow Down Aging at the Cellular Level” panel discussion will be held at noon Monday, hosted by Destination Wellness Midcoast Maine, with nutritionist Judi Valentine, Ph.D.; Bowen body work practitioner Sherrie Clark, R.N.; and neuromuscular therapist Susan Barnes.
The “Leer y charlar” Spanish language reading and conversation group and the Tuesday Book Club will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The Camden Philosophical Society will meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday, and the Beaded Jewelry Workshop will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
On Thursday, the workshop “Your Next Career Move: Tools to Get Started” begins at 5:30 p.m. and the “Sumi-e Landscape of Maine” workshop, with Frederica Marshall, will be offered at 6 p.m.

Ice carving demonstration
Master ice carver Tim Pierce will give a carving demonstration at 1 p.m. Sunday in front of the Camden Public Library at 55 Main St.
The demonstration is designed for the community teams that will make ice sculptures for Camden’s Winterfest, but it is open to everyone.
The Winterfest will be held Jan. 30 through Feb. 7.
PORTLAND
Kids First workshop
The Kids First Center will host the talk “Forgiveness & Letting Go of the Past” with presenter Tricia Weyand, LCPC, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the center at 222 St. John St., Suite 104.
The workshop is designed for parents and professionals and will focus on processing the emotions associated with separation and divorce.

Immigrant outreach session
United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Portland Public Library will host an immigrant outreach event from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Meeting Room 5 in the library at 5 Monument Square.
USCIS staff members from the Portland office will provide case status updates and answer questions about naturalization, citizenship, permanent residency and other immigration-related benefits.
Free educational materials will be available while supplies last.
Those interested in the naturalization process will receive information about eligibility and residency requirements, application forms, fees and processing times.
Individuals interested in checking on the status of their cases are advised to bring all relevant documentation.

Talk on terrorism in Africa
The Portland Public Library will host the talk “Terrorism in Africa: The Case of Boko Haram” at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Rines Auditorium at 5 Monument Square.
The talk will focus on the 2014 abduction of 276 girls by Boko Haram and what lessons can be learned from the case.

Lunch and Learn YMCA talk
Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center will host its weekly Lunch and Learn program at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at 521 Main St.
Following a luncheon, Central Lincoln County YMCA executive director Meagan Hamblett will give the presentation “Imagine the Y’s Future,” outlining the YMCA’s plan to expand and renovate its aging facility that serves 10 local communities.

A.A. Milne celebration
The Kennebunk Free Library will celebrate the birthday of children’s author A.A. Milne (Jan. 18, 1882) by hosting a Winnie-the-Pooh event at 4 p.m. Wednesday at 112 Main St.
Children in kindergarten through grade 5 are invited to learn about what inspired the popular stories featuring Winnie-the-Pooh, hear a Milne story and complete a craft project.
Children are invited to bring a bear or stuffed animal for show and tell.

Kids invited to read to dog
The Kennebunk Free Library will begin a Tail Waggin’ Tutor program from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at 112 Main St.
Students of all ages are invited to drop in to read to Jack, a Labrador retriever, for this program that aims to help children increase their reading skills and confidence by reading aloud to a non-judgmental listener.
No registration is needed to participate. The program is free and wheelchair accessible.

Afterschool program starting
A new afterschool program, Studying and Stress-Busting, will be offered for students in grades 6 through 12 from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 13, 20 and 27, in the Reference Room at the Kennebunk Free Library, 112 Main St.
The sessions provide an opportunity for students to complete schoolwork and gather with friends in a relaxed and supportive environment. Group study sessions and project work are encouraged.
A variety of stress-busting activities, such as word games, coloring sheets and other creative projects, also will be available.
Melissa West, the teen librarian, will be on hand to help with homework questions and research needs.
Teens invited to play games
Teen gaming sessions will be offered from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. each Friday through January in Hank’s Room at the Kennebunk Free Library.
Teens are invited to play video games on a projector screen. A Wii gaming console, controllers and games will be provided.
Role-playing games, table-top games and personal device games are welcomed, too.

Heifer International speaker
Gorham Woman’s Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church on School Street.

Mannix to discuss book
WCSH6 weatherman Kevin Mannix will talk about his book, “Weathering Shame,” at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Wiscasset Public Library at 21 High St.
The book, co-written by Mannix and his wife, social worker Linda Rota, details their individual experiences with shame and stigma after being raised in homes where alcoholism and suicide played a major role.
Books will be available for purchase and signing by Mannix.

Learn to cook bean supper
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension will continue its local cooking workshop series from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Extension’s Cumberland County office, at 75 Clearwater Drive.
Participants will learn how to cook a classic baked bean supper, including coleslaw and brown bread, using local ingredients such as heirloom Maine bean varieties.
Participants will take home a pound of beans and whole grains for the class bread recipe.

Update on climate pact
The talk “A Global Agreement on Climate Change: Reporting from Paris” will be held at noon Thursday at Maine Audubon, Gilsland Farm Road.
Presented by the World Affairs Council of Maine and Maine Audubon, the talk will be presented by Cathy Lee and Lucy Van Hook.

Country music celebration
The Pine Tree State Country Music Association will host a Celebration of Country Music at 1 p.m. Sunday at Westbrook American Legion Post 197.
The event will include performances by Travis Pinkham and the Down the Dirt Road Band, Dennis Moro, Bobby Le and Gloria Jean.
Also featured will be raffles, door prizes, a cash bar and food.
