An Aroostook County man was killed early Wednesday morning in a camper fire in Ashland, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The body of the man, 60-year-old Michael Kelley, was found inside the camper after the fire. The camper had been parked along Main Street near a home in Ashland. The camper was destroyed.

Kelley’s body was burned beyond recognition and the State Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to use DNA to establish a positive ID.

According to state police, Kelley parked his 17 x 8-foot camper on the properties of several friends. It had been parked on Main Street in Ashland since early fall.

Investigators are looking at both the propane heater and numerous candles inside the camper as possible causes of the fire.
