An 83-year-old man was in critical condition at Maine Medical Center on Wednesday night, hours after his car collided with a tractor trailer on the Route 26A bypass in Gray.

Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce said the tractor trailer ran over the top of the car, crushing it.

John Watson of Gray was taken to the hospital after the crash and was listed in critical condition.

Joyce said Watson’s car hit a guardrail, crossed into the opposite travel lane and collided with the tractor trailer driven by Jeremy Dustin, 24, of Jay. Dustin was shaken up but not injured by the collision.

Joyce said the investigation continues, but it appears that Watson may have suffered a medical problem before the crash.

The bypass, between routes 202 and 26, was closed from around 4:30 until 7:30 p.m., police said.
