Boys Basketball
Coach: Mike Francoeur (first year)
Last year’s record: 11-7
Key players: Troy Bogdahn
Key games: “Every game,” says Francoeur.
Outlook: The Scots have a proud recent history and should never be counted out. That said, they struggled at times to find their chemistry and consistency last season, and the loss of a solid group of seniors to graduation in June means they’ll be looking again to reestablish leadership and a formidable starting five. Francoeur is new to the program, so it will be exciting to see what he does with a team in transition.
Girls Basketball
Coach: Scott Regan
Last year’s record: 6-12
Key players: Bethany Ashley (sr.), Cassidy Emery (sr.), Megan McIntosh (sr.)
Key games: TA, Westbrook, McAuley
Outlook: Graduation claimed seven players from last year’s Lady Scots, gouging out a “pretty decent hole that we need to fill,” as Regan says. “Our seniors are ready to put their stamp on the team and the younger kids are ready to step up.” Summer ball with the program has helped several girls immensely. TA and McAuley, last year’s A West finalists, are two of Bonny Eagle’s first three games this winter; Westbrook, a strong opponent the Lady Scots will travel to, is the other. Those bouts “will really set the bar on what we’re capable of,” says Regan.
Boys Hockey (with Massabesic/OOB)
Coach: Loren Blair
Last year’s record: 6-10-2
Key players: Cam Roy, Tanner McClure
Outlook: “Make the playoffs,” says Blair simply.
Girls Hockey (with Gorham/Massabesic)
Coach: Nat Germond
Last year’s record: 9-9, fell in first round of playoffs
Key players: Mary Adams, Madison Russell, Hanna Blair, Anna Rathbun, Alexandra Johnson, CC Cochrane, Isis Adams
Key games: Biddeford, Portland, Cape/Waynflete/South Portland, Cheverus, Winslow
Outlook: Germond’s girls have reached the playoffs for two seasons running, but they face a difficult schedule this winter and find themselves perhaps under-experienced. “We have many young and first-year varsity players who’ll have to step up and make an immediate impact,” Germond says. “Scoring goals will be a challenge.”
Swimming
Coaches: Morgan Gryskwicz (head), David Gryskwicz (asst.)
Key athletes: Dan Smith
Outlook: “We have a wonderful group of swimmers who will work hard in hopes of making it to States,” Morgan Gryskwicz says.
Boys indoor track coach Christ Strout, girls indoor track coach Andrea Johnson, cheering coach Brandi Bradley, alpine skiing coach Sean Munkacsi and wrestling coach Greg Gonyea couldn’t be reached.
Troy Bogdahn returns to the court for the Scots this winter as a senior.Travis Marsh takes to the ice for the MOB co-op (that’s Massabesic, OOB and Bonny Eagle) again in 2015-16.Junior Tanner McClure should play a prominent role on offense for the MOB (Massabesic, OOB and Bonny Eagle) this year.
