A Wiscasset man died in a crash on Route 218 in Whitefield on Thursday night.

Cory A. Barter, 38, was not wearing a seat belt when his northbound 1997 Saab went off the road near Thayer Road and hit a tree at 8:30 p.m. Barter was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Speed and alcohol apparently contributed to the crash, investigators said. A blood test will determine Barter’s blood alcohol content, the sheriff’s office said.

Route 218 was closed for about two hours.
