Connor Aube of Falmouth High, a two-time Maine Sunday Telegram all-state player, signed a letter of intent Thursday to play Division I baseball at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Aube signed the letter in the Falmouth High lobby with his parents and Coach Kevin Winship alongside.
“It should be a fun experience,” Aube said. “It will be a new environment where I will get to see the sunlight. Tennessee-Martin was the big one. The scholarship money was a big factor.”
He said he also weighed offers from the University of Maine and Fairfield University in Connecticut.
Aube has been a starter in center field for the Yachtsmen since his freshman year. In three seasons he’s never batted lower than .372, with a best of .491 as a sophomore.
Aube has been a first-team all-Western Maine Conference selection the past three seasons.
“It’s really exciting for Connor to go down there and showcase his talent,” said Winship.
“His hard work and dedication has paid off. His freshman year we knew he was a special player and had a chance to go somewhere.”
Aube said he was scouted by Tennessee-Martin while playing for the Northeast Baseball travel team last summer.
“I was playing against teams from the South and holding my own,” he said.
Tennessee-Martin plays in the Ohio Valley Conference. It finished with a 9-21 league record last season and was 14-35 overall.
Aube was told he’ll play in the outfield.
“Hopefully it will be in center,” said Aube, who plans to study business in college. “As long as I get to hit, I’ll play anywhere.”
Aube is also one of the top running backs in the state and will lead Falmouth into the Class B South championship game Saturday against Marshwood.
He said he briefly thought about pursuing football in college but decided baseball was the better option.
“Baseball is easier on the body. I wanted to stay intact,” he said.
Aube joins Matt MacDowell (Dartmouth) and Will D’Agostino (Holy Cross) as recent Falmouth High baseball players to commit to Division I schools.
Several other high school seniors in southern Maine have – or are about to – accept college athletic scholarships:
• Jack Fiorini of South Portland signed Tuesday to play lacrosse at Division I power Syracuse.
• Dan Guiliani of South Portland, one of the top high school shot putters in the country, signed Thursday with Iowa State.
• McAuley basketball players Sarah Clement (New Hampshire) and Jess Willerson (Cornell) will sign Tuesday.
• Jenny Bush and Kyra Schwartzman, both of Kennebunk, will sign Monday to play lacrosse at Division II schools. Bush will be heading to Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Schwartzman has decided to play at Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts.
• A pair of Cheverus swimmers will sign Monday and Tuesday. Michael O’Donovan will sign with Marist College of Poughkeepsie, New York, on Monday. Jacob Griffin will sign with Providence on Tuesday.
