Key Club offers fall cleanup for seniors

The Key Club at Scarborough High School is offering free fall clean-up yard services to local senior citizens 65 and up. The work will be completed on Saturday, Nov. 14, and all applications for assistance must be received no later than Thursday, Nov. 12.

The service is offered on a first-come, first-served basis and is weather permitting. Applications are available through Community Services or by contacting Elise Pelletier at epelletier@scarboroughschools.org.

Choral concert at high school

The choral program at Scarborough High School will present its annual fall concert, Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m., in the Winslow Homer Auditorium. The program includes “Go Down Moses,” “Joyful, Joyful,” several barbershop numbers and a traditional Hebrew folksong – “Erev Shel Shoshanim,” among others.

There is no charge, but donations will be accepted to help offset the costs of the annual competition trip in the spring.

Gardeners meet

The Scarborough Garden Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, in the recreation hall at the Hillcrest Retirement Community. There will be a bow-making and greens workshop. Guests are welcome. Call 510-1371 for more information.

African drumming ?at library

Master African drummer Jordan Messan Benissan will be performing at the Scarborough Public Library on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m.

The event, which is free, is being offered as part of a series of programs in partnership with the Camden Conference that has a 2016 theme of “The New Africa.”

Benissan was born in Togo and is a member of the Ewe People. He was introduced to music and dance at an early age through ceremonies and rituals and received his traditional music training from several West African master drummers.

Benissan now teaches music at Colby College and has performed traditional African drumming and Highlife music around the world. His recordings have been nominated for “Best World Music Album” by Phoenix Magazine and featured on National Public Radio’s “All Songs Considered” program.

Wentworth holds Literacy Night

The Wentworth School in Scarborough will host a free Family Literacy Night for students and their families, Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 6-8 p.m. For more information, call 730-4600.
