Windham voters on Tuesday rejected a proposal to borrow $7.7 million for a new public works building.

The vote was 1,110 to 997 against the measure.

They also voted to re-elect Town Councilor Dennis Welch, who beat challenger David Lydon, 1,049 to 773.

Welch, 46, who has served on the council since 2011, works for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Lydon, 36, is an IT manager.

The proposed 31,000-square-foot public works facility would have been three times the size of the existing building and house the schools’ transportation maintenance.

It would have added an average of $56 per year over 20 years to the tax bill of a $200,000 home.
