Two recent deaths suspected of being drug overdoses led to the arrest of two men Monday night in Lewiston on heroin and cocaine trafficking charges.

Vincent Steed, 34, of Lewiston and Devin Webbert, 30, of the Bronx, New York, were arrested by officers of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency after a search of an apartment on Lincoln Street, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The agents and Lewiston police found 53 packets of heroin, 72 bags of crack cocaine, scales, packaging material and more than $1,500 in suspected drug proceeds, McCausland said. The approximate street value of the seized drugs was $6,000.

McCausland said the investigation that led to the arrests began when two people died over the weekend. McCausland did not have details of those deaths, but said that they occurred in Androscoggin County.

Steed and Webbert are not charged in connection with the deaths, but the investigation is continuing, McCausland said.

The two men were staying at the apartment where police found them, and they were arrested without incident. The apartment’s renter was not there at the time. Bail for each was set at $50,000. Both are expected to appear Wednesday in Lewiston District Court.
