Fire destroyed a mobile home at 249 Lower Cross Road in Lebanon on Wednesday morning, and the state Fire Marshal’s Office has been called to investigate the cause.
Firefighters were called to the two-alarm fire about 7:30 a.m., and found smoke billowing from the building when they arrived.
North Berwick Deputy Fire Chief Larry Straffin said the home appeared unoccupied, but firefighters weren’t sure until after they had been fighting the fire for about an hour.
The mobile home, had multiple additions, and a metal roof that trapped the heat and made fighting the fire a challenge, Straffin said. The effort was hampered by shortages of manpower and water. Teams had to use tanker shuttles to get enough water to fight the fire, he said, and many fire departments from the area called in.
Straffin said power was still connected at the building but he doesn’t believe anyone was living there. The Fire Marshal’s Office will try to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
The fire was under control by 10 a.m.
The building, which was gutted but still standing, is on a sparsely populated stretch of road.
