Bryan Gallant, 32, of Portland was the top New England finisher at PPD Beach2Battleship iron distance triathlon, held on Oct. 17 in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Gallant finished the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run in 9 hours, 56 minutes and 55 seconds, placing second in the 30-34 age group and 24th overall out of 631 participants.

Gary Smith made a hole-in-one on the 17th hole at Portland Country Club on Oct. 12. He used a 6-iron for the 194-yard shot, which was witnessed by Jane Smith.
