Peace Action speaker

Author Phyllis Bennis will be the keynote speaker at the Peace Action Maine annual meeting Tuesday at the Woodfords Club, 179 Woodford St.

Bennis’ talk, “Understanding ISIS and the New Global War on Terror,” will address the possibilities of diplomatic approaches to ISIS and other aggressive groups.

Doors will be open for the annual meeting at 5 p.m., followed by a potluck at 6 p.m., the talk at 7 p.m. and a Q&A and book-signing. The talk is free and open to the public.

Free mammograms offered

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Southern Maine Health Care will give free mammograms to women in the community who don’t have insurance.

The screenings will be offered from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Goodall Medical Office Building, 25A June St., Sanford, and from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the SMHC Center for Breast Care, 1 Medical Center Drive, Biddeford.

Family fest at church

The annual Fall Family Fest will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the New Life Church campus at 551 Alfred St.

The Camden Public Library will celebrate Halloween with two events for children and adults.

Climate change in the Arctic

A panel presentation, “Changing Climate and Dynamic Cultures: Survival in the Arctic,” will be given at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lancaster Lounge, Moulton Union, at Bowdoin College.

How have Arctic indigenous people responded to changing marine and terrestrial environmental conditions? And what are the social, cultural, political and economic strategies they use to survive?

Four scholars will address these questions by looking at adaptation strategies and cultural change among the Inuit of North America and the Sakha of Russia.

Bird seed fundraiser

The Wells Reserve at Laudholm and York County Audubon are taking orders for their annual bird seed fundraiser, with discounts offered for those placing an order by Friday.

Several varieties of seed will be sold, including sunflower seeds, millet, thistle, cracked corn, peanuts and suet cakes, supplied by Blue Seal.

Seed will be available for pickup Nov. 12, 13 and 14 at the big barn at the Wells Reserve at 342 Laudholm Farm Road. Feeders and other nature-theme items also will be sold at the pickup spot.

Wells Public Library at 1434 Post Road will host the following programs this week:

Computer Camp: Computer Basics will be offered at 1:30 p.m. Thursday for those wishing to learn basic computer terminology, how to turn the computer on and off, and what the parts of a computer are used for.

The presentation “Gardening with Jolene: Cooking with Fall Harvest Foods” will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday with Master Gardener Jolene Staruch. Taste appetizers and desserts made from the autumn harvest.

Artist to speak at gallery

Artist Kris Sader of Waterfall Arts will talk about her artwork and printing techniques at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Corridor Gallery, 256 High St.

French-Indian war speaker

Author Michael Dekker will give a presentation about his new book, “The French and Indian Wars in Maine,” at the meeting of the St. George Historical Society at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the St. George Grange Hall on Wiley’s Corner Road.

Dekker’s book explains underlying causes of the conflict between the French and British for control of Maine; friction between the Massachusetts government and the Scotch- Irish settlers here; and the no-win situation of the Indians who were being displaced from their lands.

A potluck supper will take place before the meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Celtic event to raise funds

York County Community Action Corp. will host a Halloween Ceilidh and Silent Auction from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Nonantum Resort.

The event begins with a silent auction at 6 p.m. followed by the ceilidh at 7 p.m. in the main ballroom. The Irish dance music trio Boghat will perform.

A ceilidh refers to a Scottish or Irish gathering where guests join in traditional dress, music, dance, storytelling, food and drink.

Guests can dress in kilts, street clothes or Halloween outfits with a Celtic theme.
