SOUTH PORTLAND — Residents without working smoke detectors in their homes will have the option of having one installed for free as part of a national Fire Preparedness Campaign.

Volunteers and members of the South Portland Fire Department and the American Red Cross of Maine will be knocking on doors Saturday, Nov. 7, to spread information about the importance of smoke alarms and fire safety, according to a press release Tuesday from the Red Cross. At homes that don’t have a working smoke alarm, a battery-operated model will be installed at no cost.

The goal of the five-year campaign is to reduce the number of fire-related deaths across the country by 25 percent, according to the release. More than 800 alarms were installed in homes across the state last year. The goal this year is to exceed 1,800.
