BOYS
Will Bessey, Brunswick football: Bessey scored six touchdowns and gained 324 yards to lead unbeaten Brunswick to a 56-35 win over previously unbeaten Skowhegan. Bessey carried the ball 29 times and scored on runs of 1, 5, 16, 50 and 6 yards, and caught a 20-yard pass play from Thomas Hanson. Through five games, Bessey has carried the ball 112 times for 986 yards with 13 touchdowns.
HONORABLE MENTION
Cam Day, Bonny Eagle football: Day, the Scots’ second- string quarterback, ran for 170 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, and passed for 54 yards and another touchdown as Bonny Eagle scored 36 unanswered points in the second half to rout Deering, 42-7.
Drew Kane, Scarborough golf: Kane, who was named to the Maine Sunday Telegram all-state team last year, shot a 73 to lead all boys at the SMAA qualifier to the state tournament. He helped Scarborough, the defending Class A state champion, get a chance to defend its title as the Red Storm qualified for the team championship.
Simon Trcka, Thornton Academy soccer: He scored all three goals for the Golden Trojans in a 3-2 win against previously unbeaten Gorham last Thursday. Thornton beat South Portland on Tuesday to improve to 9-0-2.
GIRLS
Becca Archer, Cheverus field hockey: Archer scored two goals, including the winner with three seconds left in overtime as the Stags beat Bonny Eagle, 3-2. She also had two goals in a 3-1 win over Deering as Cheverus held on to the top spot in Class A South.
HONORABLE MENTION
Tyler Spence, Falmouth soccer: Spence scored the game’s only goal in a key 1-0 win against Cape Elizabeth and also scored in the Yachtsmen’s 1-1 tie with Yarmouth.
Ciera Berthiaume, Windham soccer: After scoring both goals in a 2-1 win over Deering, Berthiaume added two goals in a 13-0 win against McAuley and an assist in a 2-0 win against Biddeford as the Eagles remained unbeaten.
Hashilla Rivai, Thornton Academy golf: Rivai was medalist with a 72 in the SMAA team qualifier at Natanis for the state team championship. Her score was lower than all the boys.
