Transgender Maine, an exhibit focusing on Maine people who identify as transgender, is showing at The Michael Klahr Center at the University of Maine at Augusta, 46 University Drive, through Dec. 18.
The exhibit features stories of transgender individuals, as well as some of the history of the issues relating to gender in Maine. The exhibit is being sponsored by Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine.
The exhibit is both educational and informative, and highlights the work of more than 50 groups and individuals through photos, film, audio recordings, documents and artifacts. One woman featured in the exhibit is Gia Drew, a Kennebunkport resident who serves as program coordinator for Equality Maine.
In conjunction with Transgender Maine, the Human Rights Center will also host its third annual Pride Film Festival beginning Oct. 8 for four consecutive Thursdays. The festival is free and all films will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Klahr Center. For a full list of films, visit hhrcmaine.org.
The center will also hold its annual Transgender Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20. The event will begin at noon with a free lunch, followed by a ceremony and reading of the names of transgender people who have been killed in the United States this year. To date, more than 20 names are on that list.
Exhibit hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by appointment on weekends and evenings.
