Campaign stop in Portland for Clinton
PORTLAND (AP) — Presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton is appearing at a middle school in Maine’s largest city as she courts voters while seeking the Democratic nomination.
Clinton will appear at King Middle School in the Portland on Friday. She is scheduled to speak at the event at about 4:15 p.m. The appearance will be open to the public.
A Clinton spokesman says the event is a “grassroots organizing meeting.”
The former secretary of state is working to build campaign infrastructure outside the early primary states.

3 candidates up for UMA president job
AUGUSTA ( AP) — The University of Maine in Augusta is considering three candidates to serve as the school’s next president.
The Kennebec Journal reports the field has been narrowed down to James Conneely, Guiyou Huang and Lawrence Gould, none of whom work at the university or live in Maine.
UMA spokesman Dan Demeritt says the interim president, Rebecca Wyke, will return to her role as vice chancellor once the new president is selected. It’s not clear if she was an applicant.
Demeritt says the search committee interviewed nine candidates before choosing three finalists.
He says the candidates plan to visit the Augusta and Bangor campuses later this fall. The board of trustees will consider the Maine System Chancellor’s final recommendation at a November meeting.
The new president is expected on campus early next year.
Man accused in wife shooting back in court
ALFRED ( AP) — The case of a New Hampshire man accused of breaking into a Maine home and shooting his wife and the homeowner has returned to court.
Gregory Owens’ case came to York County Superior Court in Alfred, Maine, on Thursday for a pretrial conference. The 58- year-old Londonderry resident is facing 14 charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault.
The case will likely return to court for another pretrial conference in December.
Authorities allege the Army veteran broke into the Saco home on Dec. 18 and shot his wife, Rachel Owens, and the homeowner.
Prosecutors say Gregory Owens was having an affair, and the woman had threatened to tell his wife.
Owens has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison.
Price of key bait fish fluctuating in Maine
SORRENTO (AP) — The price of a critical bait fish is fluctuating heavily in recent weeks for fishermen on Maine’s eastern coast.
WLBZ-TV reports Atlantic herring normally costs about $25 per bushel, but the price shot up to almost $40 in many areas last week when the fish became less available. Herring is the most popular form of bait among Maine lobstermen.
The cost of bait tends to be higher the further north it is shipped because the principal Atlantic herring fisheries are in Massachusetts and southern Maine. State regulators say a computer glitch resulted in a miscalculation of the quota for the fish in inshore areas of the Gulf of Maine. That caused an immediate cap on herring fishing in that area.
Bait prices appear to be leveling off this week.
Wescott prepares for life after competition
CARRABASSETT VALLEY (AP) — Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott is training for more gold, but he’s also preparing for life after competition.
The Portland Press Herald reports Wescott is joining Winterstick Snowboards’ ownership group. The company plans to open a custom snowboard-manufacturing shop at Sugarloaf Mountain in Carrabassett Valley, where the 39-yearold lives. He’ll help design and manufacture the boards.
Wescott says it gives him another way to build his passion. He says it makes him refocus on what attracted him to the sport.
He won gold medals at the 2006 and 2010 Olympics, but was sidelined during the Sochi Olympics in 2014. He took the 2014-2015 season off to recover from a knee injury and the death of his father. But he plans on competing in the World Cup circuit this winter.
Camden International Film Festival underway
CAMDEN ( AP) — The Camden International Film Festival’s four-day celebration of documentary filmmaking is underway in mid-coast Maine.
The 11th annual festival began on Thursday and runs through Sunday. It will include more than 60 feature and short films from around the world. Organizers say this year’s festival features more international movies than any previous year.
This year’s festival also includes a program of historic films, with support from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Event founder and executive director Ben Fowlie says this year’s lineup showcases how documentary film is “thriving and continuously evolving.”
The festival takes place in Camden, Rockport and Rockland.
