Last call for art show entries

Entries are open through Friday, Sept. 18, for the seventh annual Yarmouth Art Festival, Oct. 21-24 at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church at 396 Gilman Road in Yarmouth. The show is open to artists from throughout Maine. Entries are submitted via a digital form for consideration. Jurors this year are artist Suzanne Harden; Anne Haas, Bowdoin College art librarian; and Peg Golden, owner of Greenhut Galleries in Portland.

The 2015 show will be open Wednesday, Oct. 21, through Friday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. An artists’ reception, including music and refreshments, will be held Thursday, Oct. 22, from 5:30-8 p.m. Admission is free for both the festival and the reception, with donations accepted. The 2014 show featured 80 Maine artists exhibiting 162 pieces, selected by a panel of jurors from among nearly 350 pieces submitted. Thirty-three pieces were sold for total sales of $12,535. The event, created in 2009 as a new venue for Maine artists, features painting, drawing, sculpture and photography.

Entry fees and sale commissions support St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church programs, including contributions and member support of local community services such as Friendship House, Yarmouth Community Food Pantry and St. Elizabeth’s Essentials Pantry in Portland.

Eye screening scheduled for dogs

An all-breed eye screening and microchip exam will be held at Yarmouth Veterinary Center, 75 Willow St., will be held Sunday, Oct. 25, at Yarmouth Veterinary Center, 75 Willow St. It is sponsored by the Maine Retriever Trial Club. The clinic is strictly to screen for eye disease. Registration closing date is Oct. 11. Appointment times will be emailed or phoned. Beem to talk on Alfred Chadbourn

Music festival set for Oct. 3

The Royal River Music Festival, originally scheduled for Aug. 22, has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., at Royal River Park. It will feature performances by the Jason Spooner Band, Armies (Dave Gutter and Anna Lombard), Gunther Brown, Gorilla Finger, the Gather Rounders, the Loose Threads, Downeast Soul Coalition, the Delta Knights, Jenny Jumpstart and the Hadacol Bouncers. There will also be food from Guston’s, Little Jamaica Cart, Pure Pops, Calendar Island Creamery, Kabayan Philippine Foods and more.

Assessing staff inspections

The Yarmouth assessing staff is continuing interior and exterior inspections of town properties. The inspections include a short walk through the home interiors and measurements of the exterior of the buildings to verify if the town’s information is correct. No interior photos will be taken.

The assessors will have proper identification from the Cumberland County Regional Assessor’s Office and will have shirts/coats noting “County Assessing.” Appointments are available upon request. Reading group choices listed

Merrill Memorial Library has announced its selections for upcoming Readers Circle book discussions. The group meets the last Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. The books chosen are: “The Luncheon of the Boating Party,” by Susan Vreeland, Sept. 24; “Sacre Bleu,” by Christopher Moore, Oct. 29; “The Soloist,” by Mark Salzman, Nov. 19; and “World to Come,” by Dara Horn, Jan. 28, 2016 (no program in December). Farmers market winding down

The Mill Street Market is open Thursdays from about 3-6 p.m., through Sept. 24, outside 317 Main Community Music Center on the corner of Mill and Main streets. The farmers market will offer fresh produce, local seafood, Maple’s Gelato, cut flowers, pies and more, as well as to live acoustic music. There also will be arts and crafts for kids.
