BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy says four Vermont programs are collectively receiving $500,000 in federal grants to combat youth substance abuse.

Leahy announced Wednesday that the Drug- Free Communities Support Program awarded $86 million to nearly 700 communities across the country.

Bennington’s Alliance for Community Transformations, a collective that promotes community engagement, advocacy and healthy community design, will receive nearly $125,000. Officials say the money will go toward building “nontraditional” partnerships to speed up the work needed in Bennington.
