SANFORD — A forum billed as a community conversation about heroin and opioid abuse is set for Tuesday, Oct. 13 at Sanford City Hall.

The forum is the third since the spring designed to help folks understand the heroin and opioid problem that is raging across York County, the state and New England as a whole.

It is sponsored by the York District Public Health Council, the Opiates Task Force and others, and will include a panel discussion about the opiate problem in York County, according to Nichole Ivey of the Drug Free Communities Support Program, part of Strategies for a Stronger Sanford.

Ivey said the forum is free and open to the public. Panelists include a Maine Drug Enforcement Administration agent, a representative of the York County District Attorney’s office, Sanford Police Chief Tom Connolly, Director of Emergency Services at Southern Maine Health Care Dr. Andy Powell, people in recovery and others.

A question and answer session will follow.

The forum will be held from 3-5 p.m. in the council chambers on the third floor of City Hall, 9129 Main St.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
