The Windham-Raymond Athletic Boosters will hold its 22nd Annual Windham Auto Show behind the North Windham Hannaford on Sunday, Sept. 13.

The show, which benefits the Boosters and the Windham High School athletic department, raised $8,000 and attracted nearly 300 cars. According to Dan McGowan, a former president of the Boosters, the goal is to hit similar numbers at this year’s show.

Participants can enter cars into the show from 7-11 a.m., while judging will occur at 11 a.m. Spectators are invited to watch the show from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, with or without cars, and $3 for seniors and students. There is no admission fee for children aged 5 or under.

McGowan, who has organized the logistics of the show for the past two years, said he expects a variety of motor vehicles to be on hand this year.

“It ranges from new cars to old 1950s souped-up cars, trucks, motorcycles, hot rods, Corvettes, Mustangs, the older versions,” he said. “Everybody walks around and looks at each other’s cars.”

There will be 20 judges who will divvy the cars into 28 categories and award first-, second-, and third-place prizes using a point system, according to Frank Jimino, the owner of Jimino’s Saab and Volvo in Windham and the organizer of the judging component of the show.

“They start with everything from antiques up to the early ’30s, then they jump into the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, just as a general class,” Jimino said. “Convertibles are a general class. We break them down into GM, Chrysler, or Ford for the muscle stuff. We have an overall class called Special Interest and that tends to be kind of a catch-all for the odd-ball stuff.”

Jimino said he tries to bring on at least 10 new judges every year, and to mix up the categories the judges are ruling on, in order to keep the judging fair.

The shows are usually marked by a sense of camaraderie, he said.

“Car show people are kind of a breed of their own,” Jimino said. “They love to show their cars off, that’s obviously common.”

Although the show will occur rain or shine, Jimino said he expects the weather to hold up.

“It’s just a bunch of like-minded people coming together having a great time,” Jimino said. “We’ve been really lucky with the weather over the years, I mean really lucky. It’s looking like this weekend is going to be the same way.”
