Back to school!

This week marks the new school year for SAD 61. I hate it that they go back in August before Labor Day. Especially this year because the predicted weather is summertime hot and humid. School sports are also back in full swing, and that is less fun when you are getting dehydrated by the second. Do take care and send your kids with plenty of water and cool clothes for school.

5K fun

Naples first annual 5K road race was a smashing success. More than 200 runners lined routes 302 and 114 in Naples to run or walk for some great causes and community spirit. To check out the finishing statistics visit www.splittimeracemanagement.com. For photos, visit www.mainerunningphotos.com or visit Kelly McGowan’s Facebook page (she lives in Naples), as she was the official photographer of the race. Congratulations on a job well done George Vooris!

Garden club update

The Songo Garden Club held its 61st annual meeting at the Naples Golf and Country Club on Aug. 13. Officers, returning for the coming year are: President Doug Bogdan, Vice President Karen Bogdan, Secretary Deb Dean, and Treasurer Carmen Caron.

The next meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m., at the Singer Center in Naples. Members and guests will have the opportunity to stencil or paint designs of their own creation on wooden garden crates constructed by member Helen Brown and base painted by member Jack Dean. Members have already reserved their crates, but several more are available. The cost for this project is $20, which includes the crate, paints, brushes and stencils. For more information about the Songo Garden Club or to register for this project, call Deb at 693-4871.

Summer extended

Nothing says summer like block party! The United Methodist Church of Good Fellowship in Naples, at the Village Green, is sponsoring another block party free to the community on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. This is their third year hosting. All are welcome to come for food, a bouncy house, some games and music. Food served includes hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, lemonade, casseroles, desserts, popcorn, and ice cream.
