BEIJING — North Yarmouth native Ben True qualified for the finals in the 5,000 meters at the track and field world championships early Wednesday.

True used a late kick to finish second in the first heat with a time of 13:45.09.

Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethopia won the race in 13:45 and Edwin Cheruiyot Soi of Kenya was third in 13:45.28.

The top five finishers in the two qualifying heats automatically advance to the final, which will be run at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. The next five fastest times also qualify.

True will be joined in the finals by American teammates Ryan Hill and Galen Rupp. Hill finished fifth in the second heat with a time of 13:19.67 to qualify. Rupp earned a spot with his time of 13:20.78, good for seventh in the second heat.

True earned a spot on the U.S. team by finishing second at the U.S. championships in Eugene, Oregon, on June 28 with a time of 13:51.09. He also finished second in the 10K at the U.S. championships.

True then ran 13:06.15 to reach the qualifying standard for worlds at the KBC Night of Athletics on July 18.
