NORRIDGEWOCK — A local man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly assaulting his grandfather by punching him in the head and repeatedly slamming his head onto the floor, police said.

Robert French, 43, is charged with two counts of domestic violence assault, disorderly conduct and refusal to submit to arrest or detention.

Police were sent to Pine Street in response to a report of domestic assault at 12:37 p.m. Tuesday, according to Chief Deputy James Ross, of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Don Avery said he determined that French had punched his 74-year-old grandfather then repeatedly slammed his head into the floor.

The older man had significant head injuries and was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital by ambulance, Ross said.

French also assaulted Avery and resisted Avery’s attempts to handcuff him, he said, adding that French remained noncompliant while on the way to the Somerset County Jail.

French also has an address in Saco but was living in Norridgewock as of this week, Ross said.
