BRUNSWICK
University College at Bath/Brunswick has announced the availability of Osher New Beginnings Scholarships for the University of Maine System fall 2015 semester, which begins Aug. 31. The Osher New Beginnings Scholarships is offered by the UMS to encourage more Maine people of all ages to participate in higher education.
The New Beginnings Scholarship will be given to first-time students and returning adult students who have not attended college for five or more years and who have accumulated 30 or fewer successful credit hours. Scholarship recipients who successfully complete their course and who matriculate and enroll at a UMS campus in the semester subsequent to receiving a New Beginnings Scholarship may be eligible for an additional, equivalent, scholarship award.
To be eligible for the New Beginnings Scholarship applicants do not need to apply or be accepted to a UMS degree program. The scholarship will cover the cost of one university course, including tuition, fees, books and required materials. To qualify, a student must be a Maine resident, have a high school diploma or equivalent and be someone who is committed to working with an academic advisor to successfully complete a university course.
The New Beginnings Scholarship is made possible by a gift made in 2000 from The Bernard Osher Foundation. Since then, thousands of students have received scholarships and have enrolled in university courses. Scholarship recipients benefit from the personalized support of experienced advisors and are encouraged to make use of tutoring services, as well as a variety of skill-development workshops.
“Several New Beginnings Scholarships are available at the Bath/Brunswick Center, it is important that students apply now for the fall semester,” said Dennis Unger, director of University College at Barth/Brunswick. “To help reduce barriers for first time and returning adult students the application process is quick and easy, and an advisor is here to answer questions and help people get started.”
