Brunch at church
A public brunch will be held on Sunday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m.-noon at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 919 Roosevelt Trail. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, bacon, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, doughnuts and beverages. Brunches are available to take out. Tickets are $6 and sold at the door. Proceeds will help support Religious Vocations in Maine.
Open house
Friends Church will hold an Open House on Saturday, Aug. 8. The historic landmark will be open for people to see the old Meetinghouse. There will be a free lunch for anyone between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The Meetinghouse was built in 1849. It is on Route 202 (Gray Road) right across from Windham Human Services and the Public Safety Building.
Auditions for Halloween show
Windham Center Stage Theater has announced auditions for its October performance of “BOO!” a Halloween production featuring 12 skits and a one-act presentation. The show is directed by Darnell Stuart. Performances will begin Oct. 23. Auditions for male and female roles, ages 11-92 will be held Friday, Aug. 14, from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10-11 a.m., at WCST, Windham Town Hall. Police fundraising
The police union is starting its 2015 fundraising campaign. The union appreciates the continued support and generosity of the community. The fundraising will last six to eight weeks. As in years past, and to comply with the state’s solicitation laws, the union has hired a telemarketing firm to conduct the calling and do the donation pickups. The donations collected from the fundraising effort go to local and national charities such as the Maine Adaptive Skiing, youth basketball, Southern Maine Hospice, Relay for Life, Andrew Phillips Fund, Christmas toy shopping, Dami Family Fund, D.A.R.E. Windham, Dempsey Challenge, Johnsey/Betters Benefit Ride, Loftis Family Fund, Manchester School Closet Fund, Mary’s Walk (cancer), Maine Children’s’ Cancer Fund, Maine Cancer Foundation Tri for a Cure, Maine Marathon, Moody’s Guns N’ Hoses Golf Open, Moore Family Fund, National Education for Assistance Dog Services, Patrick’s Pals, POW MIA Recognition Weekend, Project Everlasting Gratitude (Windham wreath-laying project), Rick Duncanson Jr. Scholarship Fund, Scarborough PTO, Special Olympics Maine – Lobster Dip, Team Kyle, Trauma Intervention Program (TIPs), Windham Little League, Windham Cancer Support Group, Windham Youth Basketball Association, Windham Heroes Program and Wounded Warrior Project.
The solicitation contractor will be picking up donations from people in a red 2011 Kia Soul. If people are not comfortable leaving the donations outside for pickup then they can always drop them off at the police station. The solicitation contractor will not be asking people for credit card information. VFW meets
Windham Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10643 will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at the Windham Veterans Center, Memorial Drive, North Windham. Supper is at 5 p.m. followed by a regular meeting at 6 p.m. Memorial Drive is the road just before Friendly’s, off Route 302.
Veterans support
Veterans Support Officer Matt Haley will be at the Windham Veterans Center on Wednesday, Aug. 12 , from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Note these are longer hours to meet the increasing need. If you have questions about benefits and are a veteran or dependent of a veteran, stop by. No appointment is needed. Haley is available on the second and fourth Wednesday each month. Senior catered meal
On Thursday, Aug. 13, the Community Cafe? at Unity Gardens will serve a catered meal, in addition to music by Bob Gendreau and raffles. The menu includes lobster or chicken roll, chips, cookies and soda. Donation is $7. Call Virginia Billings at 892-3891, from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Backpack program
Believe it or not school is just around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about the Back to School Backpack Program. This program is limited to Windham residents with children entering grades K-8 in the Windham school system. Each child will receive a backpack filled with age-appropriate school supplies. Sign-ups must be done in person. The deadline is Aug. 21. No phone calls. All applicants must show proof of residency to qualify. For those of you that would like to donate a backpack or school supplies, drop them off at the Windham Food Pantry.

Luau and dance party
Project Graduation 2016 of Windham High School will hold an End-of-Summer Luau on Friday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. at Dena’s Lobster House & Tavern, Windham. This is a 21-plus event. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. The band is the Time Pilots, from 7-9 p.m. Proceeds from the ticket sales benefit Project Graduation 2016.
