ERIE, Pa. — James Robbins drove home four runs and also scored twice as the Erie SeaWolves trounced the Portland Sea Dogs 10-1 on Thursday night.
The SeaWolves, occupying last place in the Western Division, are now 44-66. The Sea Dogs, last in the East, are 41-71.
Portland starter Justin Haley (4-13) took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth. Haley had given up just three hits before yielding a seemingly innocuous one-out single to Harold Castro in the fifth.
The end came quickly for Haley after that. Wynton Bernard’s triple and Jason Krizan’s hard double gave the SeaWolves a 2-1 lead and brought Sea Dogs pitching coach Kevin Walker to the mound.
Haley stayed in the game for two more pitches, leaving after a sharp single to left by JaCoby Jones put runners on first and third.
Simon Mercedes relieved Haley and induced a ground ball from Dean Green, but shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin misplayed the ball as Krizan raced home for a 3-1 lead.
Robbins and Connor Harrell sandwiched RBI singles around the second out before Wade Gaynor capped the rally by lifting a soft single to left for a 6-1 lead.
Bernard scored on Green’s sacrifice fly to left in the sixth before Robbins completed the SeaWolves’ scoring with a three-run home run to right field in the eighth. Jones and Green scored ahead of Robbins on the homer.
Portland scored in the top of the fifth when Jordan Weems came home on a single to left by Aneury Tavarez.
Erie starter Austin Kubitza (7-10) surrendered six hits in six innings for the win. Warwick Saupold pitched three innings of one-hit relief for his first save of the season.
Harrell finished with three of Erie’s 12 hits, while Green had two runs and two RBI without getting a hit. Dustin Lawley had two hits for Portland.
