Buxton voters in a special town meeting this week will be asked to approve up to $15,000 in additional salary for its code enforcement officer position, following Fred Farnham’s recent retirement.
The special town meeting has been set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, at the Municipal Building, 185 Portland Road.
Jean Harmon, Vice Chairwoman of Buxton selectmen, said Tuesday the town has offered the code enforcement position to someone, but the board hasn’t released a name as yet.
Town Clerk John Myers said Tuesday that Farnham had worked 32 hours each week and the town seeks to add eight hours, equaling a 40-hour week. Charisse Keach, town treasurer, said Monday Farnham’s annual salary was $40,186.
Voters had set Buxton’s annual budget at the town meeting in June. In the special town meeting on Thursday, the question voters will determine reads, “To see what sum not to exceed $15,000 the town will vote to approve for the Code Enforcement Officer’s salary. Said money to come undesignated surplus.”
Myers said the vote would be a show of hands unless a secret ballot election was to be approved. Buxton residents wishing to vote are required to be registered. Before the vote, the first order of business will be to elect a moderator to preside over the meeting.
Harmon said Farnham had worked for the town 21 years.
“The town has been fortunate to have him,” Harmon said and added his retirement leaves “a big void.”
