The Circus Smirkus show at Merriconeag Waldorf School in Freeport will go on as scheduled at 1 p.m. Tuesday, unless there is an impending threat of a storm, said Mary Martin, events coordinator at the school.

Strong thunderstorms have been passing through the state, and on Monday, two people were killed and more than 20 injured when a severe storm blew down a circus tent in northern New Hampshire. About 100 people were in the tent at the time.

Martin said that the big Circus Smirkus tent is much better equipped to handle stormy weather.

“The Circus Smirkus tent is inspected for each event, and is built to hold about 800 people,” Martin said. “It’s actually safer than being on the road in a vehicle. The tent is grounded and inspected on a weekly basis. If it looks like a severe threat, then we would delay the show.”

Merriconeag student Sarah Norden of Yarmouth will be the local favorite in the Circus Smirkus shows, which are scheduled for 1 and 6 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
