One thing Mainers have learned in LePage’s five years in office is that he likes to make a joke of things. His off-the-cuff remarks have been hurled at everyone from legislators and national figures to major non-profit organizations and the press. These thoughtless comments have ranged from offensive to threatening. There was the time he mentioned blowing up the Portland Press Herald building while testing a fighter jet simulator, or his recently-voiced desire to see Bangor Daily News cartoonist George Danby and the entire legislative delegation from Lewiston shot. He told the Maine NAACP to “kiss his butt,” and he stated that Obama “hates white people,” telling him to “go to hell.” He even compared the IRS to the Gestapo, the Nazi police service. For these and other uncouth comments, LePage has made national news and stained Maine’s reputation in the public eye.
LePage’s comments, besides being insensitive, add to his reputation as a political bully. He should know by now that his comments are damaging to Maine and our state’s reputation. These days we know that no news is good news when it comes to Gov. LeRage.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
