Sale to benefit Alzheimer’s Association
A yard and bake sale to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association takes place? Saturday, Aug. 1, from 9 a.m.-noon at Comfort Keepers In-Home Care Office, 51 U.S. Route 1 in Scarborough, just over the Main Street, South Portland line.

National Night Out event in Redbank
The South Portland Police Department is sponsoring a National Night Out event on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Redbank Community Park.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Planned activities include face painting, a bicycle safety check, K-9 demonstrations, a police versus local youth basketball game, a rock wall, food, music and more.
Parade of Lights set for Aug. 8
The second annual boating Parade of Lights, sponsored by the South Portland Lions Club, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 8, 7:30-9:30 p.m. in Portland Harbor.
Boaters are encouraged to decorate their vessels and to muster at the staging area no later than 8 p.m. The event will benefit Toys for Tots and each participating boater is asked to make a donation of at least two new, unwrapped toys.
Non-boaters can also take part by dropping off toys, between now and Aug. 23, at the following locations:

• Evelyn’s Tavern – 121 Sawyer St., South Portland

There is no entry fee for the Parade of Lights, which has a rain date of Aug. 15. All boaters are asked to follow safety regulations and to maintain a headway speed of no more than 5 knots. Also, all skippers are to refrain from consuming alcohol prior to or during the event.
Radio communication will be conducted on VHF Channel 72, as will any announcements regarding any necessary postponement. The U.S. Coast Guard and other patrol vessels will be on hand throughout the event.

Pirate party on tap
On Friday, July 31, at 2 p.m., the South Portland Public Library will host a Pirate Party. Break out your pantaloons and gold doubloons, put a parrot on your shoulder and sail by the library for pirate crafts, games and activities. This event is free. Call 767-7660 for more information.
Nomination papers available Aug. 5
Nomination papers for two seats on the Scarborough Town Council and four seats on the Board of Education will be available at the Town Clerk’s Office starting on Wednesday, Aug. 5. In addition there is one seat open on the Scarborough Sanitary Board of Trustees.
The seats held by Town Council Chairwoman Jessica Holbrook and Councilor Ed Blaise are both up, as are the school board seats held by Donna Beeley, Chris Caiazzo and Jackie Perry.
A one-year term will also be available on the school board to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of Jane Leng this spring.

Last movie at Bug Light Park
The last movie for this year’s Summer Movie Night Series at Bug Light Park in South Portland will be held on Thursday, July 30.
The movie will be the animated feature “Tangled,” instead of the live-action “Cinderella” as originally advertised. The park gates will open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie starts at sunset.
The evening also includes food trucks, face painting, kid’s games and more. The movie series is sponsored by the South Portland-Cape Elizabeth Community Chamber.
Audubon offers birding by canoe
The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center will host a birding by canoe adventure on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 7 a.m.
Get a closeup look at birds in their natural habitat while paddling through the marsh at this quiet and peaceful time of day. Migration will be under way and the birds will be feeding on the banks to bulk up for their long trip south.

Library holds reading finale
