Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy being conducted by the state medical examiner’s office to determine whether 39-year-old John Knight of Cape Elizabeth died as a result of falling from his second-story balcony on Saturday.
Cape Elizabeth police Chief Neil Williams said partially rotted wood on the deck of Knight’s home at 10 Tiger Lily Lane, where Knight was pronounced dead, is “definitely” one factor in the tragic accident.
“The railing appeared (to be) in old condition,” said Williams.
As part of their investigation, since no one witnessed the accident, Williams said, police are also trying to track Knight’s whereabouts on Saturday.
After several attempts to contact her husband on Saturday afternoon, Knight’s wife dispatched a relative to their home where Knight’s body was discovered on the patio below the porch. Police were called to the scene around 4:45 p.m.
“We are just following up on leads, and awaiting any information that the medical examiner’s office may give us,” Williams said, Monday. “I am awaiting a phone call today on how things are going to proceed.”
Williams said police have not yet determined whether the incident was accidental. Once in a while, said Williams, police will respond to calls regarding someone who was injured from falling on the rocks at Fort Williams Park, or from a ladder at their home, but he can’t recall any incidents where a resident was injured or died as a result of falling from a porch.
The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police Capt. Brent Sinclair at 767-3323.
